PACC Final Conference

After the four training courses, a networking conference will be organized in Rome, Italy, on the 4th and the 5th of February 2019. The conference will gather those in high-levels of responsibility in the Ministries to which NMHS belong and coordinate with, as well as the Directors of Meteorological Services of the Region. The conference will further promote the strategic collaboration of involved countries with WMO and Italy. The aim of this conference is to enhance technical and scientific cooperation among National Meteorological Services, in the perspective of providing operational climatic services for disaster risk reduction and adaptation to climate change in agriculture and other key sectors.
During the conference, an evaluation of the training program will be conducted. A participatory process to co-design a new capacity building initiative to support the development of Climate Services for West Africa will be carried out with the participation of representatives of the CILSS/ECOWAS countries, of WMO, AICS, AGRHYMET, IBIMET-CNR and international experts.
Working group discussions will be encouraged, and outcomes reported during the plenary session(s), to allow as many participants as possible to share their expertise on critical issues, and on the co-design of a new capacity building initiative.

The new initiative, following the outcomes and recommendations of the SYMET-13 (WMO No.1219, 2018), might foster such cooperation providing a solid foundation for increased sharing of training resources and approaches, offering learning opportunities, a model of development or common accreditation, certification, evaluation and assessment systems. The new initiative will contribute to the operational implementation of the WMO Global Campus, encouraging multilateral collaboration among RTCs and other training institutions and by providing a shared and open platform for sharing training contents, tools and learning technologies that all providers and users could use.

PACC 2018: Climate Change Impacts

The “International Training Course on Climate Change impacts: assessment and communication” is the third event of the Training Program on Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction in Agriculture (PACC/RRC), financed by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and realized by WMO in collaboration the Regional Training Center in Italy IBIMET-CNR and the AGRHYMET Regional Centre.
The Training Program consists of four high education courses, two organized by the Regional Centre AGRHYMET in Niamey (Niger) and two by IBIMET-CNR in Florence (Italy), and a final conference in Rome

This course is organized in two parts.
The Distance Learning course from the 28th of May 2018 to the 22nd June 2018, and the Classroom Learning, in Florence (Italy) from the 25th June to the 6th of July 2018.

The course is specifically designed for climatologists, agro-meteorologists, agronomists and hydrologists by creating an environment where climate, hydrology and agriculture actors could share a common view and develop a common language. The targeted countries are the CILSS/ECOWAS Member Countries.

PACC 2017 Training Course

20 NOVEMBER – 1 DECEMBER 2017 | FLORENCE – ITALY

The International Training Course on “Climate Services for Disaster Prevention” is one of the steps of the PACC-RRC Training Programme on Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction in Agriculture.

The Project Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction in Agriculture is a training programme with the aim to reduce the impacts of Natural Disaster and Climate Change on the agricultural sector in West Africa.
This project is funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation and realized by the World Meteorological Organization in collaboration with the Regional Training Center in Italy IBIMET-CNR and the AGRHYMET Regional Centre in Niger.

The course started on Monday November 20th at the CNR Research Area of Sesto Fiorentino, and lasted till Friday December the 1st. The workshop course has been preceded by a Distance Learning Training Course attended by all participants. The Florence Workshop is structured in Theoretical lecture in the morning and “hands-on” afternoons. At the end of the course the participants will be asked to complete the course evaluation questionnaire and a competency test.

The Participants

The composition of the trainees that take part to the International Training Course on Climate Services for Disaster Prevention (CSDP) is very rich. This year there are 28 participants coming from the 17 different countries of the Western Africa CILSS/ECOWAS. Among them we have 6 women and 22 men, working all in the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services of their home Countries. The large part of the trainees are Meteorologists (19), followed by Agrometeorologists (5), Hydrologists (3), and 1 Meteo/Climatologist.

Distance learning

The distance learning activities have played an important role in the training programme. Two different Moodle deployments have been set up: one for the Distance learning Course, prerequisite to access the workshop, the second one specifically dedicated to the face-to-face training in Florence. The Moodle Platform is adopted by the WMO, implemented by IBIMET and powered by the Institute of Crystallography of the National Research Council of Italy.
