Climate change is causing new patterns in climatic conditions over the world, which are already affecting many aspects of our society.
Though being a global phenomenon, nowhere else in the world is climate change expected to have ecological, economic and social consequences as dramatic as those in the Mediterranean basin. Higher than-average projected changes in climate and shifting weather patterns endanger an extremely rich and intertwined biological diversity, which supports human activities such as farming. In this context, the agriculture sector in particular is especially threatened, as it is largely climate-driven and thus highly vulnerable to its variability.
The risk of crop failure and pest damage, as well as natural hazards such as heat waves, storms or floods, is likely to increase, requiring immediate action to be undertaken to adapt to this uncertain outlook.

The challenge is to develop tools to build more resilient, efficient and sustainable agriculture and food systems. To that end, the development of climate services to support decision-making and best practices in agriculture is essential.
That is why the aim of MED-GOLD is to translate state-of-the-art climate data and climate predictions — at the seasonal timescale and beyond — into easily accessible, valuable information for a wide range of end-users in the agriculture sector.

SLAPIS, Local Early Warning System for Floods of the Sirba, is an integrated system that aims to promote decision-making and behavioural changes from reactive to proactive attitudes to adapt to climate change and reduce hydrological risk in the Municipalities of the Sirba.
The philosophy of SLAPIS is to demonstrate that institutions and communities can set up a simple system built on existing skills and tools that allows the proactive use of hydrological and hydraulic information and forecasts to reduce the risk of flooding.

The system integrates local observations with meteorological and hydrological forecasts through a risk information system, an integrated information and communication mechanism, flood risk mapping, local flood risk reduction plans and awareness raising and training.

SLAPIS a été développé dans le cadre du projet ANADIA 2.0 par une équipe pluridisciplinaire coordonnée par le DIST (Dipartimento Interateneo di Scienze, Progetto e Politiche del Territorio del Politecnico e dell’Università di Torino) et composée par la Direction de l’Hydrologie et la Direction de la Météorologie Nationale du Niger et IBE-CNR. Le projet a été cofinancé par l’Agence Italienne pour la Coopération au Développement.

The complexity of the drought phenomenon requires the availability of a system as comprehensive and integrated as possible to respond to the different users’ requests.
