The U.S. Drought Monitor is a map released every Thursday, showing parts of the U.S. that are in drought. The map uses five classifications: abnormally dry (D0), showing areas that may be going into or are coming out of drought, and four levels of drought: moderate (D1), severe (D2), extreme (D3) and exceptional (D4).

The Drought Monitor has been a team effort since its inception in 1999, produced jointly by the National Drought Mitigation Center (NDMC) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The NDMC hosts the website of the drought monitor and the associated data, and provides the map and data to NOAA, USDA and other agencies.

The USDA uses the drought monitor to trigger disaster declarations and eligibility for low-interest loans. The Farm Service Agency uses it to help determine eligibility for their Livestock Forage Program, and the Internal Revenue Service uses it for tax deferral on forced livestock sales due to drought. State, local, tribal and basin-level decision-makers use it to trigger drought responses, ideally along with other more local indicators of drought.

Climate change is causing new patterns in climatic conditions over the world, which are already affecting many aspects of our society.
Though being a global phenomenon, nowhere else in the world is climate change expected to have ecological, economic and social consequences as dramatic as those in the Mediterranean basin. Higher than-average projected changes in climate and shifting weather patterns endanger an extremely rich and intertwined biological diversity, which supports human activities such as farming. In this context, the agriculture sector in particular is especially threatened, as it is largely climate-driven and thus highly vulnerable to its variability.
The risk of crop failure and pest damage, as well as natural hazards such as heat waves, storms or floods, is likely to increase, requiring immediate action to be undertaken to adapt to this uncertain outlook.

The challenge is to develop tools to build more resilient, efficient and sustainable agriculture and food systems. To that end, the development of climate services to support decision-making and best practices in agriculture is essential.
That is why the aim of MED-GOLD is to translate state-of-the-art climate data and climate predictions — at the seasonal timescale and beyond — into easily accessible, valuable information for a wide range of end-users in the agriculture sector.

The philosophy of SLAPIS is to demonstrate that institutions and communities can set up a simple system built on existing skills and tools that allows the proactive use of hydrological and hydraulic information and forecasts to reduce the risk of flooding.

The system integrates local observations with meteorological and hydrological forecasts through a risk information system, an integrated information and communication mechanism, flood risk mapping, local flood risk reduction plans and awareness raising and training.

The educational web portal www.klimafolgenonline-bildung.de is a tailor-made climate service to make climate and climate impact data and scientific knowledge of climate impacts and adaptation applicable for secondary and vocational schools in Germany. Climate science fundamentals and worksheets combining the interactive experience exploring climate data in the web portal with other sources have been designed for the school context to enable teachers to educate the complex relationships of climate change and its impacts [1]. In addition, as an easy-to-use compendium for the multitude and heterogeneous teaching materials, we have set up the separate web site www.klimabildung-pik.de. This site includes as well handouts, explanations and a tutorial. Here, we follow a competence-oriented approach, directed at everyday experience and the direct regional reference of students, enabling them to come to reasoned decisions.

To test and improve the developed learning lessons, to make them more self-explanatory and to tailor them for disciplinary school lessons, we performed more than 40 workshops and surveys with teachers. In secondary schools, nearly for all subjects we found entrance points for climate change learning units. In vocational schools, we developed learning units for economics, social studies, politics, healthcare management and insurance brokerage.

During the development process, we identified a number of challenges related to climate education with an interactive web portal approach (see as well [1]): the requirement to break down the scientific information when using a web portal, the usability of scientific visualizations for non-expert users, the communication of uncertainties and the integration of interactive web portals in school lessons in general. A specific observation is that in some cases the gap between the media skills of teachers and students can be a problem while interactively orienting in a complex space of climate scenarios, sectors and parameters. The additional time requirements for teachers integrating new interactive material into a rigid school curriculum and the level of attention span of some students can be further obstacles using the provided teaching material. For vocational schools, we observed much less hurdles and a higher motivation of students even without teacher support.

For future work, we plan to integrate the teaching material into our new international portal version (currently available at kfo.pik-potsdam.de), providing teaching material tailored to climate impact information as well outside of Germany and for teachers and students in other world regions.
