Ecovino: Smart Viticulture in the Frascati DOC Area

The Ecovino project, funded by GAL Castelli Romani e Monti Prenestini, is the result of a collaboration between the Antiche Terre Tuscolane Cooperative—producer of Frascati DOCG wine—and leading research institutions including the Department of Agricultural, Forestry, Nature and Energy Sciences and Technologies (DAFNE) at the University of Tuscia, IBIMET – CNR, and METEOTEC.

In response to the fragmented structure of local vineyards—often divided into small plots with distinct microclimates—the project aims to provide detailed, location-specific information to help winegrowers:

  • Optimize vineyard management practices

  • Combat the European grapevine moth (Lobesia botrana)

  • Manage grape ripening based on evolving climate conditions

At the heart of Ecovino is a smart digital platform that integrates local weather data, vine phenology, and pest development models. Through this system, growers receive SMS and email alerts indicating the best times for field interventions. The goal? A more efficient and environmentally conscious use of plant protection treatments.
